Maternal, infant and social factors associated with birthweight.

چکیده
IN 1900, the Infant Mortality Rate (I.M.R.) in Belfast was 153 per 1000 livebirths (Elwood, 1973). By 1971, the rate had fallen to 26 per 1000 (Registrar General's Report, 1973). This figure is, however, one of the highest in any city of comparable size in the United Kingdom. The I.M.R. in Birmingham in that year was 20 per 1000, in Bristol it was 17 and in Stoke on Trent 16, while even Teeside recorded 19.8. Elwood and Pemberton (1971) examined possible reasons why the I.M.R. in Belfast was higher than in Birmingham and concluded that 40 per cent of the excess infant mortality in Belfast was accounted for by differences between the two livebirth distributions by birthweight. Low birthweight is known to be associated with increased neonatal mortality, and also with relative mental and physical impairment of surviving infants (Weiner and Milton, 1970), so any diminution in the number of infants of low birthweight would hopefully improve the situation with regard to both mortality and morbidity. This study was undertaken in order to examine the relationship between birthweight and certain biosocial factors, and to identify some of the characteristics of mothers likely to have infants of low birthweight, and hopefully, to suggest means of reducing the incidence of low birthweight infants. Some characteristics of low birthweight infants were also studied.

Preconceptional factors associated with very low birthweight delivery in East and West Berlin: a case control study
BACKGROUND Very low birthweight, i.e. a birthweight < 1500 g, is among the strongest determinants of infant mortality and childhood morbidity. To develop primary prevention approaches to VLBW birth and its sequelae, information is needed on the causes of preterm birth, their personal and social antecedents, and on conditions associated with very low birthweight. Despite the growing body of evid...
متن کاملCatch-up growth in Malawian babies, a longitudinal study of normal and low birthweight babies born in a malarious endemic area.
INTRODUCTION Infant growth has not been studied in developing countries in relation to maternal factors related to malaria in pregnancy and maternal illiteracy. OBJECTIVE To describe growth patterns in infants with low and normal birthweight and determine maternal risk factors for infant undernutrition. METHODS Babies born in a rural district of southern Malawi were recruited. An infant coh...
متن کاملCan we explain why Brazilian babies are becoming lighter?
BACKGROUND We tried to explain why a marked decrease in birthweight of 122 g occurred over a 15-year period in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. METHODS Factors reflecting biological, social, and health care characteristics (infant gender, parity, maternal age, marital status, type of hospital, maternal smoking, preterm birth, small for gestational age [SGA], and prenatal care) were assessed on 6711 ne...
متن کاملExpectant Mothers Maximizing Opportunities: Maternal Characteristics Moderate Multifactorial Prenatal Stress in the Prediction of Birth Weight in a Sample of Children Adopted at Birth
BACKGROUND Mothers' stress in pregnancy is considered an environmental risk factor in child development. Multiple stressors may combine to increase risk, and maternal personal characteristics may offset the effects of stress. This study aimed to test the effect of 1) multifactorial prenatal stress, integrating objective "stressors" and subjective "distress" and 2) the moderating effects of mate...
متن کاملRelative risks of low birthweight in Scotland 1980-2.
Routinely collected data for 187,000 Scottish singleton livebirths in 1980-2 were used to relate the risk of birthweight below 2500 g, 2000 g, 1500 g, and 1000 g to sex of infant and nine maternal factors. Maternal height was a major predictor of birthweight below 2500g but was less important in predicting birthweight in the lower intervals. A history of prenatal death and spontaneous abortion ...
